Mission Statement

The Tyndale Philosophy of Religion group aims to promote research into philosophical aspects of the historical Christian faith. ‘Philosophy of Religion’ is broadly construed so as to include metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, the history of philosophy and the various other areas of inquiry that feature in the Philosophy programmes of British and American universities. Although there is slight bias in the direction of the analytic tradition TF Philosophy of Religion is not restricted to this or any other branch of Philosophy or to any specific Christian tradition.

The group organises a Conference in Cambridge each summer and plans to organise other occasional lectures and study groups across the UK throughout the year.

The Tyndale Fellowship has a Doctrinal Declaration of Faith (http://www.uccf.org.uk/about-us/resources/doctrinal-basis.htm ). Those who attend and contribute to the Philosophy of Religion section may, provided that they are engaged in active research and are willing to subscribe to the Doctrinal Basis, seek membership of the Fellowship. Membership of the Fellowship, however, is not required in order to take part in the life of the Philosophy section and papers have often been read which critically examine aspects of the doctrinal basis of the Fellowship. Anyone who is interested in Philosophy of Religion may attend the meetings of the group.

Opinions expressed at lectures, seminars and workshops are solely the opinions of the speakers and do not represent the opinions of the Fellowship or the Philosophy of Religion section of it.

Whilst displaying academic rigour, TF Philosophy of Religion conferences try to be engaging and non-technical, enjoyable to the layperson as well as to the professional philosopher. Tyndale members self-consciously try to philosophise in a spirit of Christian love, in the spirit of intellectual humility and mutual respect which Christian profession entails. In brief, whether you are a student, an academic, a cleric or someone who simply likes the intellectual discussion of religious themes, the Tyndale Philosophy of Religion section has something for you.
